Florida flood zones are designated by FEMA on Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs). The most important flood zones in Florida are: Zone AE (Special Flood Hazard Area with established Base Flood Elevation — requires elevated construction and flood insurance for federally backed mortgages), Zone VE (Coastal High Hazard Area — requires open pile foundation and the most stringent flood construction requirements), and Zone X (outside the Special Flood Hazard Area — flood insurance not required but still recommended).
